Hello and welcome to The Araucana Gypsy where we breed a rare breed of poultry, namely the Lavender Araucana.
This bird is probably best known for it's ability to lay blue eggs which also has earnt it the nickname of the Easter
egg chicken. This thrills young children & adults alike.. there is always that look of amazement when they see their first
blue egg!
What we believe sets the Lavender Araucana apart from most other poultry breeds, is their unique facial feathering of
crests, muffs & ear tufts as well as their blue egg laying ability.
They are a tough, hardy bird & out of all the breeds we keep they are the most prolific layers. Being the last to
finish laying at season's end... & it's always the araucana's kicking off the new season in the Spring with their pretty
blue eggs.
So.. in the interest of keeping a rare, purebreed alive, we believe they are an asset to any chook lover's backyard.
This particular breed caught our attention quite by accident one day about 3 years ago, when a good friend asked if we
would be interested in what we initially thought were a rather odd looking pair of chooks.
The rooster was causing trouble in amongst her silky bantams and needed to find himself another place to live.
The arrival of our first blue egg prompted us to do a little research on these two characters and we soon discovered we
had a pair of Lavender Araucana's, who were given the names of Mustang & Sally.
The rest is history..
We have moved locations a couple of times within the Yarra Valley in Victoria, hence our name, 'The Araucana Gypsy'.
